What do i need to do to re-sleeve a 97' Yamaha YZ250?

It has a alloy chrome cylinder, but can i just take it to a machine shop and have them machine it in. A local bike shop said it needed to be nickal plated or something along those lines. Any help would be appreciated i really want to get my bike running before the summer is over.
