Baptism Confusion Question?
Here is the authority of the answer to your question. "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Tim. 3:15-17). Regarding baptism Jesus Christ stated. "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned." (Mark 16:16). The account of the Ethiopian eunuch's conversion and baptism illustrates this very well. As the eunuch was reading the book of Isaiah Phillip was joined to the chariot. Phillip went on to preach unto him Jesus (Acts 8:35-38). That preaching must have included the necessity to be baptized, because in verse 36 the eunuch said, "See here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Phillip answered, "If thou believest with all thine heart thou mayest. And he (the eunuch) answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still and they went down both into the water, both Phillip and eunuch and he baptized him." Peter preached the first sermon on the day of Pentecost. "Therefore let all the house of Israel know uredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:37-39). Even Paul the apostle was told what to do: "Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins" (Acts 22:16). "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Rom. 1:16). Read the ninth chapter of Acts for the account of his conversion. Christ Jesus and his grace extends to all who obey the gospel. "When sometime were disobedient when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing wherein few, that is eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience toward God)." (1 Pet. 3:20-21). It's clear that baptism is the work of God; he commands it. We put on Christ when we are baptized. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Gal. 3:27). We become part of Christ's body, the church. "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead that in all things he might have the preeminence." (Col. 1:18). "Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection." (Rom. 6:3-5). "Nicodemus saith unto him (Christ), How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (Jn. 3:4-5). We don't see any example of a person praying a sinner's prayer or being baptized after one is saved. We can't do anything to save ourselves. "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast." (Eph. 2:8-9). "So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17). We must couple our belief with obedience. "And brought them out and said, Sirs what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes and was baptized, he and all his, straightway." "Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts." (Heb. 4:7). "For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven." (Heb. 12:25). "Let us draw near with a true heart in full urance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water." (Heb. 10:22).
