Freezing and storing fresh talapia?

So, this is the first time I have ever bought and stored talapia myself. I bought fresh (thawed) talapia from giant 3 days ago. I put it straight into the freezer when I got home in its original package that I purchased it in. Since, I have read somewhere that when buying fresh talapia if you are not planning to prepare and eat the fish within two days but are storing it for later use to "remove it from its original packaging and wrap in foil to sore in it in the freezer". Is this necessary? Has anyone else froze and stored their fresh talapia in its original package? Is this still safe to prepare and eat? Thanks.
