Moon craters.?

Why did some of the asteroids that formed craters on the moon not miss and hit Earth? Obviously we have evidence of some activity, but the moon is FULL of craters. It would seem statistically that we'd have a lot more evidence. (Im a microbiologist, not an astonomer, forgive my ignorance?)
