Marinating and then searing a pot roast?

I'm making a pot roast in the slow cooker tomorrow, and was wondering if it would work out okay to marinate the roast tonight and then sear it tomorrow before putting it in the crock pot? I'm guessing it might be a bit messy after marinating it and then searing it in a pan.
